Someone should be responsible for policing what is advertised to your children, right?
Well, there is an industry
self-regulating organization called CARU, or the Children’s Advertising Review Unit. But the guidelines issued by CARU are now 30 years old, and those children are now parents. After
mounding pressure from consumer advocacy groups, CARU has agreed to review these guidelines. At issue is whether advertisers should limit online games promoting products, paid product placement in television programs and the licensing of popular characters to sell food. And it is also no secret that food products promoted to children are high in calories, sugar, salt and fat and low in nutrients. The Institute of Medicine claims there is strong evidence linking television advertising to obesity.
