Get ready for Curious George mania. Next Friday, Universal Pictures is releasing Curious George, an animated movie based on the world-famous character of children’s literature since the 1940s. Universal Pictures holds the Curious George
license, and the inquisitive monkey already appears on everything from Dole bananas to Kidz-Eeze Cold Medicine. Movie goers already know the simian from a trailer used to promote Dolby equipped movie theatres. (And if you must use have a celebrity endorsement, Marketing Blurb recommends animated characters. An animated monkey, in fact, is far more intelligent than most celebrities.)
"From a merchandising standpoint, we're aiming at 3- to 7-year-olds," said Beth Goss, executive VP at Universal Studios Consumer Products Group. "The brand essence of George is his curiosity. I think that's the story you'll see in the movie…George is unique in that we haven't in a long time had a title with such a young focus."
Marketing Blurb expects kids (and those who advertise to them) will go ape.
