Gee, cereal is really in the news these days. It seems kids can’t watch television
anymore without some advocacy group peering over their shoulders. And the same is true for children’s websites. It seems our friends in the cereal business just cannot say out of trouble. Here’s the latest scoop. Healthy 4kids, a new website promoting healthy living to children, is running banner advertising from Frosted Flakes. The ads appear “alongside a food pyramid, a game promoting apples over cake, and the chance to vote for a favorite vegetable,” according to this article from MediaPost (free registration may be required.)
This debacle occurs while Kellogg’s and Viacom's Nickelodeon network are still subject to a lawsuit by a the Center for Science in the Public Interest to block the advertising of sugar-heavy-low-nutrient foods to young children, including via websites.
The Frosted Flakes banner ads feature photos of Olympic skiers, snowboarders, and speed skaters. Jeff Cronin, a representative for CSPI, said: "It makes it look like junk food consumption is somehow linked to athletic achievement." While Kellogg has indicated a willingness to settle the lawsuit, Marketing Blurb wonders who is placing these ads.
