
2003 was not a good year for toymakers. Tickle me Elmo was already passé, Toys R
Us and Target could not compete with Wal-Mart, and toy sales actually dropped 4% for the year. But according to the U.S. Market for Infant, Toddler and Preschool Toys, a new report from researcher Packaged Facts, the industry is on the mend. Toy sales increased by 7.7% in 2004, and surpassed $ 4.5 billion for 2005.
Sales have increased as a result of so-called Yoga Mommies, those trendy, affluent urban and suburban moms who insist on upscale clothing and ulta-expensive toys for their infants, toddlers, or children. These children are dubbed Hipster Babies and Elegant Babies by the trade. (See Brand Week, because Marketing Blurb could never make up this stuff.)
