You knew this was coming. Taxi cabs already include advertising on their roofs and trunk decks, so why not use their hubcaps? While common in Europe and Asia, hubcap advertising is still relatively new in major US cities. The new venue first appeared in LA in 2004. The wheel covers, called BigWheel, are offered by Vancouver-based Ad Fleet, the company that already markets advertising displays used by Yellow Cab. A pendulum keeps the ads upright for viewing while cab wheels are turning. Hubcap advertising runs about $150 to $200 a month per taxi, although rates differ according to city and client. Yellow Cab has hubcap advertising on 75 Houston taxis. Cabbies complain it is more difficult to add air to their tires, but admit that passengers are entertained by the hubcap pitch.
