Marketing Blurb alerted readers last month, that NBC was falling well short of required ad revenue to
breakeven on broadcasting the Olympic Games. But the network, ever a contender, decided to go for the gold with a new record for the volume of Olympic
advertising. Those watching may have noticed that NBC boosted the number of commercials aired during their coverage by 14% per hour compared to the games in Salt Lake City. This exposure is welcomed by their major advertisers, which include General Motors, Buena Vista Pictures, McDonald’s Exxon Mobile, parent company GE, and others. But despite their Olympic effort, NBC will still experience a short fall, and they are attempting to make up the difference with an 11th hour ad package which includes Torino time and future spots for the 2008 summer games in Beijing.
