Coping the Big Organic
Marketing Blurb already told you about Orgasmic Chocolate, but now we’re talking the big O—organic foods, which are huge. Organic foods entered popular culture about 1976 when Safeway stores offered produce from smaller organic farmers as a counter-cultural reaction to overuse of pesticides and herbicides by agribusiness. Over the organic.jpgyears, the demand for organic food has grown nationwide from $ 1 billion in 1990 to $ 20 billion in 2005. While this is only about 2% of the grocery business, the category is projected to grow about 18% per year through 2008. But sales are hampered by higher prices that many consumers are unwilling to pay. So Safeway stores is launching a house-brand of organic foods to bring prices back in line with non-organic offerings. The new product line is called, appropriately enough, O Organics, and includes beverages, bakery goods, cereals, canned and frozen foods, dairy products and snack items.
