You already know that Marketing Blurb is not keen on soft drinks. But we’re always eager to follow the industry, especially when The Wall Street Journal announces (paid subscription required) that Coca Cola is launching a new advertising campaign and slogan. Coke used to be the brand success story discussed in marketing textbooks, but advertising pundits and shareholders generally agree the company lost its fizz almost two decades ago. The new campaign is intended to recapture the company’s core values of refreshment and comfort, and re-emphasize their classic contoured glass bottle. We cannot comment on the creative until we actually see the campaign, but Marketing Blurb is not keen on the slogan “The Coke Side of Life.” This reminds us “Life takes Visa.” Both of these slogans are vague, uninspiring, and unconvincing.
