The New York Times, (free registration required) that the
NY Daily News decided to run a paid advertisement on the entire front and back page covers of the newspaper last week. This was not a wraparound over the regular front page—the advertisement from Toyota actually replaced the front page. "To give the whole front page away seems to me a dangerous message to send to readers," said Kelly McBride, ethics group leader at the Poynter Institute, a school for journalists. "The front page is for the news you consider most important to the community."
Marketing Blurb is less shocked and incensed. Advertisers, especially automobile advertisers, are abandoning newspapers in droves for online marketing venues. If Toyota wants the front and back page of the
NY Daily News, give ‘em a shot. PS--we don't have a photo of the issue in question, but hey, every cover of the
NY Daily News is a gem.
