product placement nonsense, where advertisers
pay to have their products woven into the editorial of television and movie scripts. This is now called
branded entertainment—which doesn’t really make much sense, because all entertainment is branded. But anyway, while all these product companies are cutting deals to get their products in the hands of the hot shows and actors, Apple products are getting a free ride. According to
The Washington Post (free registration required) iPods and Macs have been featured 250 times on 38 different prime-time shows in the last four months with no money changing hands. This adds up to 26 minutes of free prime-time advertising. The deal is simple, Apple products are cool, and cool always trumps those lame products other companies are trying to place. Script writers like cool products without a paid deal. The moral of the story is simple. Get cool and forget paid product placement.
