Now you might think that a fast food dinner with enough calories to feed a family of four for a week would sustain your appetite for the evening, and you would be wrong, naturally. As it turns out, our society is turning nocturnal, and requires an extra meal or two between dusk and dawn. This opportunity is not lost on the fast food industry. Burger chains are increasingly open all night long to serve a brisk business of nighttime noshers. NPD Group estimates that 8% of the $160 billion fast-food industry sales occur between dinner and breakfast. "The notion of breakfast at 7, lunch at 12 and dinner at 6 is over," said Bob Golden, exec VP at consultant Technomic. "Our meal periods are changing and late-night dining is just a manifestation of that ... fast food is capitalizing on it."
