Selling a burger these days is troublesome business. McDonald’s is often the target of various special-interest groups who hold the restaurant responsible for a nationwide childhood obesity epidemic. (These are poor orphans presumably, who lack parental guidance on what to eat.) But aside from missing parents, the author of Fast Food Nation, is striking McDonald’s again with a book and movie called Chew On This. This book targets 11 to 15 year old readers with an educational appeal regarding the “frightening” truth about what “lurks between those sesame-seed buns.” McDonald’s is responding with press briefing and a so-called “truth squad” and “brand ambassadors” to set the record straight. The Wall Street Journal has more (paid subscription required.) Folks--McDonald’s is not responsible for childhood obesity. Parents who allow their children to eat junk food are responsible.
