Stunning Verizon Stupidity
Every now and then, a creative director will conceive a concept so inane and inept it is telephonebook.jpgdefinitely worth repeating—even when normal people understand the stunt is illegal. Microsoft wants you to forget they decided to launch the new version of their MSN online service a few years ago by stenciling their distinctive Butterfly logo all across the streets of Manhattan. Agencies think this is clever guerilla marketing. City police think this is graffiti. Guess who is right? Today we learned from The Washington Post that Verizon repeated the same amazingly stupid stunt in Washington DC by stenciling orange-red chalk ads on sidewalks across our nation’s capital to promote Verizon Yellow Pages. The 2-by-3 foot ads in heavily trafficked areas read “Looking for something? Find it in the Verizon Yellow Pages.”  Yes, even water-soluble chalk is illegal without a city permit. Verizon paid a fine and immediately cleaned the sidewalks. Marketing Blurb says please no more graffiti advertising, thanks.
