According to The Wall Street Journal (paid subscription required,) some marketers new shoe.jpgto the online game are learning the hard way about “run of site” online advertising campaigns. If you are not careful about your online insertion order, your ad may appear in a venue you would normally avoid. This can occur when mid-channel brokers aggregate ad buys across multiple channels. Verizon was surprised, for example, to find their online advertising on MySpace alongside photos of “scantily clad women.” Agencies and their clients are demanding more control over the placement process, consistent with options available for print and television ad buys. Marketing Blurb says even if you must reach Gen X and Y, run screaming from MySpace.
