We love to share the story of Dell Computer with our marketing students. Dell turned
the retail PC industry on its ear with their made to order direct to consumer business. But expanding into consumer electronics has taken a toll of the direct giant, and Dell is reluctantly piloting two retail stores in Dallas and West Kyack, NY. These are not kiosk locations, but 3000 square foot prototypes. Like the failed Gateway retail chain, these stores will not actually stock merchandise, but act as showrooms for Dell products. Customers can place orders at the stores via phone or the web. The Wall Street Journal has more, but smart money is betting against this one. Photo Credit: Dell Computer
