You’ve heard Subway’s imperative slogan to eat fresh, and if you frequent the chain, you might have ordered their Grilled Chicken Breast and Baby Spinach Salad. But we just learned from the June issue of Fast Company, that their grilled chicken is a fraud. The chicken is actually defrosted from pre-cooked chicken strips which are mechanically branded in a factory to create the appearance they are hot off the grill. But before you protest at Subway, it turns out this practice is commonplace for Burger King, McDonald’s and almost all fast food grilled chicken. But it gets worse. The chicken is actually submerged in a giant tumble marinator and saturated with a brew of salt, oil, sugar, chemicals and fat. This resulting chicken loses it natural low fat virtue and is 20% of this bath by weight. The chicken is then air cooked (not fire cooked) and grill marks are branded in place. The only healthy grilled chicken is one you prepare yourself.
