If you try to avoid shopping at the mall these days, you are not alone. In most regions of
the country, mall shopping traffic is down. This trend started before high gasoline prices, and will likely continue until mall management companies and tenants figure out a way to make mall shopping less stressful and more desirable. Taubman Centers, with malls in Michigan, Virginia, North Carolina, Connecticut, California, and other locations is trying a new guerilla marketing tactic this summer. Taubman malls are rewards visitors with free ice cream and T-shirts over the Memorial Day weekend. The campaign is called GO, as in
go to the mall for x, y, and z. "We were looking for an unconventional way to market stores in our malls that personalizes their shopping experience," says Glenda Cole, Taubman regional marketing and sponsorship director, in a statement. "People today are so time-stressed and preoccupied, you have to work out of the box to break through the clutter and reach them."
