According to Ad Age, (free registration required) 20 state attorney generals are urging the Federal Trade Commission to tighten advertising regulations for alcoholic beverages. At issue is limiting alcohol advertising to media in which only 15% of the audience is aged 12 to 20. At present, industry marketing guidelines restrict advertising to media in which no more than 30% of the audience is under 21. These are not mandatory guidelines, and the attorney generals are demanding mandatory statutes. A student of audiences from 2003 suggests that the proposed 15% guideline would “banish ads from some NBA and NHL telecasts and from magazines like GQ, Ebony, Men's Fitness and Shape.” Marketing Blurb is not keen on government regulation of advertising. We also simply do not trust Nielsen and other rating services that segment audiences by media. Children under 21 consume ALL the same media as adults. We’re stepping down from the soapbox now.
