USA Today reminds us that movie studio normally depend upon television advertising to pitch new movies. But as Marketing Blurb always cautions advertisers--television (unless it is direct response television) is a so-so branding medium, and a zero sales medium. Movie producers now fear the same, and are turning to online promotions for promoting summer fare. Promising outlets include movie sites, and video-sharing sites like YouTube and Google Video. These generate considerable buzz and pass along views. Warner Brothers reports for example, that Superman fans have downloaded 60 million views of the movie trailers for Superman Returns. Since we are unlikely to see Superman Returns in the theatre, we decided to download the movie trailers from Supermanreturns.com. The trailers are great fun, and we hope Superman can save the world. We are less concerned with the Superman / Lois Lane romance; because as it turns out, Lois married someone else while Superman was off-planet for awhile. Maybe we will catch the whole movie a year from now via a public library DVD. Assuming that is, Superman does indeed save the world between now and then!
