In a kinder, gentler time, no one needed TV Guide magazine. You could read program listings from the local newspaper. But with the advent of cable and satellite TV, there are now hundreds of channels broadcasting thousands of programs 24 hours a day. (Think Dante’s Inferno.) But now, even TV Guide is getting hip to new digital alternatives. According to Interactive TV Today, TV Guide magazine is introducing a new column called Downloads which helps readers identify programs available for downloading to their PC or video iPod. These are website references actually, to sites like Google Video, AOL In2TV and Apple iTunes., where the downloads are available. Yes, this is an opportunity for marketers. But are digital devices fragmenting audiences beyond recognition? Perhaps not—maybe these devices offer superior targeting. But boomer women, the folks who have all the money, are not watching these screens.
