Let’s say that you’re a male or female trapped in a crowded bar. A loser you cannot shake keeps pestering you for a phone number. So give the loser a number and get on with your life. That is the deal behind the new Privatephone service offered by the voice division of NetZero. The phone number you reveal is really just a bogus front end which feeds to your real voice mail. So you can protect your real number and then decided whether or not to return the call. The idea has merit other than blowing off bar flies. You can also use the number for classified advertising responses, online dating services, and so on. NetZero decided to promote the idea with Christina Milian offering her private number on a rather public billboard in Times Square.
