Chain Store House Wines
We are not ashamed to admit we have enjoyed a glass or two of Charles Shaw house_wine.jpgCabernet from Trader Joe’s, more affectionately known as “two buck Chuck.” But we were not aware that house-brand wines are sweeping the chain store industry. To our surprise, if you are so inclined, you can purchase a private label house wine from Albertsons, Costco, Food Lion, Harris Teeter, Kroger, Safeway, ShopRite, Target, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods Market, Cost Plus World Market, and even from—gulp--7-Eleven. Marketing Blurb is not inclined to try these wines—but we were pleased to learn that The Wall Street Journal (paid subscription required) decided to do so for us. Journal staff members purchased over 75 bottles of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc chain store house brands for a blind taste testing. The wines are evaluated according to the categories of: Yech, OK, Good, Very Good, and Delicious! The results are published in print and online, but our lips are sealed.
