Marketing Blurb spends much of the day on the Internet, but we were just too busy to discover the hundreds of amateur videos of people dropping quarter-size Mentos into bottles of Diet Coke. Doing so results in a geyser of soda that can shoot 20 feet into the air. But this is not idle nonsense, mind you, because we learned about this from The Wall Street Journal (paid subscription required.) The Journal says that Mentos is delighted with the free publicity. Despite the fact that Diet Coke sales are slipping, Coca-Cola is less enthusiastic. "It's an entertaining phenomenon," said Coke spokeswoman Susan McDermott. "We would hope people want to drink [Diet Coke] more than try experiments with it." Marketing Blurb believes that shooting Diet Coke into the air is more fun and healthy than actually drinking Diet. You can view a video of the fun using 101 two-liter bottles of Diet Coke and 523 Mentos to create a dancing fountain similar to the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas.
