Disney wants you to see their new
Pirates of the Caribbean movie—
badly. They want
you to see this movie so much that they created a sweepstakes, advertisement and member page on social networking site MySpace. But Disney did not allow the sites’ 85 million members to link to the page with personal profiles containing typical content of “underage drinking and sexually suggestive material.” "We would never be on a personal profile," says Jack Pan, vice president of marketing at Disney's Buena Vista Pictures. "We want to be in the official areas." But here’s the deal. MySpace belongs to the members. When mainstream media steps in, the local residents may pull up stakes. Of course, Disney is not the only media company goofing around with MySpace.
Superman has his own Time Warner profile for the upcoming
Superman Returns movie. We learned about this from
The Wall Street Journal, (paid subscription required.)
Marketing Blurb believes they are better online venues for these folks to use.
Actually, I "befriended" both Superman and Pirates of the Caribbean characters on MySpace last week. It's kind of fun. But yes, if MySpace becomes too commercials, then people who use it to connect with each other now will find somewhere to do so.
