Marketing Blurb does not think much about ketchup. We love tomatoes, but wasabi
mustard, which we also use for toothpaste, is our condiment of choice. But we do know that ketchup is a big deal for HJ Heinz Company. In fact, Heinz is actually trimming its product line to spend more time with ketchup. Back in 1993, Heinz made a mistake they have regretted to this day. Thirty-three years ago they failed to supply the McDonald’s restaurant chain with enough ketchup during a tomato shortage, and the unhappy clown changed suppliers. But according to
The Wall Street Journal (paid subscription required) Heinz is wooing back the business with a beach head in Canadian McDonald’s outlets and with 4000 international locations. But the prize is 13,700 US McDonald’s restaurants which would add 250 million pounds of ketchup sales to their bottom line. We understand the relationship is on the mend. The WSJ article does not mention if executives from these two titan companies conduct business over lunch on a sticky plastic table.
