100-Snack Packs of Dubious Value
Back in June, Marketing Blurb told you about 100-calorie snack packs. The ploy is an calorie_snacks.jpgattempt to help dieters enjoy their favorite junk food in portion controlled packages. Examples include Kellogg's Keebler cookies, Procter & Gamble's Pringles potato chips and Kraft Foods' Nabisco crackers and cookies. Now that these products have been on the market for awhile, The Wall Street Journal decided to weigh in on their effectiveness. As you might expect, there are pluses and minuses. On the plus side, the calorie-controlled packs help teach children and dieters about portion control. In other words, this is what 100 calories of junk food looks like. On the minus side, “the highly processed starchy and sugary foods will trigger more cravings and prompt consumers to reach for a second or even third snack pack.” But Marketing Blurb neglected to consider the WSJ reminder that 100-calorie controlled snacks are grossly over-priced relative to their normal bulk packaging counterparts. In other words, those who eat more than one pack are doubly punished. Photo Credit: Kraft Foods
