You do not need Marketing Blurb to tell you there is too much advertising clutter in the world. But if you do not read The New York Times (free registration required,) you might not have heard that CBS is taking ad clutter to a new low. In September, CBS will begin advertising their fall lineup on egg shells. According to the Times, CBS will etch laser imprints of their trademark eye logo, and the name and logos of popular television shows on 35 million eggs. Some of the eggs will carry special slogans like CSI: Crack the case on CBS or Shark: Hard boiled drama. CBS will be using a new etching technology from EggFusion of Deerfield, IL, and arranged for exclusive advertising during a two month period. To allay consumer concerns, the eggs are also etched with their freshness date. All etching takes place at the time eggs are normally washed, graded and packed. CBS thinks this is very clever. Marketing Blurb disagrees, and we expect to find these eggs used as projectiles by disgruntled protestors. CBS executives should keep their heads down this fall. Photo Credit: The New York Times
