Only a month ago, Marketing Blurb warned you that Chrysler would “fall on its sword” by reviving their employee discount offer. We expected Chrysler would move inventory, but with nil or negative margin. As it turns out, we were wrong! The offer, coupled with a new Dr. Z advertising campaign failed completely. Sales at Chrysler actually dropped 17% during the period. The $ 225 million advertising campaign featured company chairman Dieter Zetsche extolling the virtues of the Daimler Chrysler merger. But according to Advertising Age (free registration required,) consumers did not even recognize Zetsche, and assumed he was a fictional character! Consumers also failed to notice mention of the employee discount offer embedded in the commercial.
