Now you might think it would be foolish to compete with Apple iPod and iTunes, and you would be right, naturally. But that isn’t stopping Microsoft for launching a series of competitive hardware and software products later this year. The new Microsoft music system will be called Zune. Microsoft has not released details other than to confirm the product line. Microsoft is already in the music download business via their MSN Music site, a serious footnote since its launch two years ago. Microsoft software also powers music portal music players produced by Creative Technology and Samsung. The new Zune system will likely disenfranchise that relationship. But whatever happens, we doubt Microsoft can possibly create the hip iconic brand image of iPod and iTunes. We learned about this development from Reuters.
