Now you might think that pink five dollar bills and other paper money is sacred to the board game Monopoly, and you would be wrong, naturally. As it turns out, cash is passé. In a new version of game released in the UK, paper money is replaced by Visa and Monopoly branded plastic debit cards. The cards are encoded with the opening balance, and players use a handheld card scanner to deposit or withdraw money from the cards. While Marketing Blurb acknowledges the value in teaching children to use such a system, we wonder if the game will be as much fun without the stacks of paper bills trading hands. Hasbro is considering introducing the debit card system in the US version of the game. Sooner than you think, Boomers will be able to play the game with their grandchildren, and bore them with stories about the good old days of cash and flipping properties in Florida in 2004.
