Marketing Blurb doesn’t watch MTV. We love music videos, because those we have
seen are cinematically clever and provocative. Such music videos are also amazingly abusive to women, and we wonder how they can possible air without massive worldwide protests. But our feelings aside, it seems that MTV is worried about their relevance in an iPod world. According to
New Statesman, the 25 year old network is falling behind rival VH1 in ratings. Judy McGrath, CEO of MTV says of the pioneering network "I've been deeply paranoid since the day it launched. I've always been afraid it's an Eighties idea. I don't know what the new company is going to feel like, but we'll be expected to grow and deliver." And while this kind of paranoia is healthy,
New Statesman reminds us that MTV is still a $ 7 billion enterprise broadcasting in 28 languages over 50 channels in 168 countries.
Marketing Blurb is not really qualified to ruminate on the future of MTV, but we do hope women stop tolerating the kind of music videos we’ve seen.
