Most media pundits have pronounced print newspapers an endangered species. It
seems that Boomers and Gen X read the papers, but Gen Y and younger folks are oblivious to newsprint. But
Editor and Publisher magazine
reports some hope from a new study revealing that teenagers who read the paper continue the habit to some degree as they grow older. According to the study, 75% of 18-24 year olds read their local paper at least once a month—IF the also read a newspaper when they were 13 to 17 years old. 81% of those surveyed read the local Sunday paper during the past four weeks, and 66% said they read the Sunday paper last week.
Marketing Blurb is not exactly
blown away by these findings. Only an estimated 220 newspapers nationwide have teen sections, many published by teen authors. About 800 papers carry some kind of syndicated content for teens. While
Marketing Blurb wishes more teens would read the local newspaper, ours is horrible, and we avoid it whenever we can. We recommend you reach teens elsewhere. Let those teens who read the paper feel like adults.
