Gee—here’s a novel idea. Use a television commercial to tell parents they are responsible for monitoring their children’s television viewing habits. After all, isn’t television the ultimate guide to life and parenting skills? Well, despite our amazement, this is exactly the objective for a $ 300 million public 18 month service campaign. Networks and stations will donate time with a commercial message urging parents to use TV controls to manage the programs their children watch. The commercials will also explain the V-chip, which to our knowledge, no one in the free world has ever used. The commercials recommend that parents prohibit children from watching shows with too much graphic violence and sexual content.
