Face it—college dorm living is a pain. And if you must live in a dorm room, you might as
well make it feel like home. That is what 17 year old Pamela Geisel of Towson University decided to do last year, when she jazzed up her room last year with decorative lamps, rugs, and posters to the tune of $ 400. According to the National Retail Federation, spending on dorm and apartment furnishings reached an estimated $ 3.6 billion in 2005--an increase of 38% from the previous year. The association estimates that that the “average college freshman spent more than $1,100 last year on back-to-school merchandise, though that figure includes electronics, like computers and MP3 players, clothes, shoes and books.” Parents seem eager to support pricy designer accessories to help children survive the transition to dorm living.
