The Wall Street Journal will place an advertisement on page one beginning in September. The space is called a jewel box, with dimensions of about 5 x 7 inches. The rate card is not public.
The New York Times thinks this is a very big deal, and industry pundits are using ridiculous terms like “journalistic integrity” to debate the merit of the ad placement.
Marketing Blurb does not think
The Wall Street Journal is selling its soul to the devil. In fact, we think the idea has merit, and believe the front page placement will be desirable for all kinds of advertisers seeking to reach their readership. Besides, we will be interested to see how any advertiser can compete with the witty Journal headlines and subheads.
