Wal-Mart Responsible for Global Warming
Okay, so many Wal-Mart is not entirely responsible for global warming. But we did learn wall_mart_energy.jpgfrom the Associated Press that Wal-Mart is the biggest private user of electricity in the world. “The world's largest retailer emitted the equivalent of 20.8 million metric tons of carbon dioxide last year, the main greenhouse gas, while the best estimate for its supply chain — all the production and shipping needed to fill Wal-Mart shelves — is 10 times that, said Jim Stanway, director of project development in Wal-Mart's energy department.” On the plus side, Wal-Mart has a number of initiatives underway to cut fuel and emissions from their fleet of trucks, and to reduce energy consumption in their store. But Wal-Mart is best known for their brutal take no prisoners approach to managing suppliers. If Wal-Mart demands green practices from suppliers, the ice sheet will refreeze. The marketing message here is simple. Marketing Blurb predicts that all major companies will be forced to promote there green policies or be demonized by crazed global-warming mobs. Get your PR folks on the phone.
