Maybe this is not the ideal blog post for the July 4th holiday, but we just learned from an AP-Ipsos poll, that weight-conscious grocery shoppers read but ignore product labels. According to the poll, almost 80 % of Americans insist they check labels at the grocery store for the amount of fat, calories and sugar in food products. But 44% percent of the same sample admitted that despite their knowledge that foods are unhealthy—they purchase and eat the products anyway. An estimated two-thirds of Americans are overweight, but nutrition information on food product labels appears to have little impact on the selection of healthier foods. As we often explain to our marketing students, taste, not content is the final arbitrator of what consumers buy to eat. And, for the holiday, we are eating as we please—thank you.
