Department Store Mergers Squeeze Rag Trade
If you think every department store in the nation is closing and reopening as Macy’s—you are almost right. Consolidation is changing the landscape of department store shopping, including what merchandise is offered for sale. And with fewer buyers and more uniform store plan-o-grams, certain suppliers are getting squeezed. In the department_store.jpgapparel industry for example, USA Today is already handicapping winning and losing brands. Those apparel makers who stand to benefit from department store consolidation include Polo Ralph Lauren, Liz Claiborne, and Phillips-Van Heusen. Brands with diminished space or those shown the door will likely include Jones Apparel, Kellwood, and Tommy Hilfiger. (Winners and losers have dozens of individual brands under these parent companies.) Marketing Blurb has decided to stay with our circa 1998 wardrobe until the dust settles. Photo Credit: USA Today
