Ex-wife Keeps the Ford Freestyle
Look, we don’t want to talk about divorce. We are faithful to our wife and our girlfriend, and life is good. Advertisers want us to live the good life too—so they don’t talk much about divorce either. But according to The New York Times (free registration required) divorce is no longer taboo with families depicted in advertising. Here is a specific example for The Times: “The Ford commercial shows two parents, two children and a dog spending a weekend shopping, driving and hanging out at the beach — but at the ford_dad.jpgend of the day, the father is dropped off at his apartment. “Thanks for inviting me this weekend,” he says while hugging his children. “Sure,” responds his apparent ex-wife, perched behind the wheel of the Ford Freestyle. The commercial ends with the father waving as the car drives away.” This commercial only implies divorce, but also suggests to us that maybe dad is driving the 1986 Buick. Kidding aside, we see no harm in this approach since most ad people are divorced anyway, and they are pitching products to couples in various stages of divorce. Stage one is marriage, naturally. If you have a link to this commercial, send it to us, and we will add it to this post, thanks. Photo Credit: The New York Times
