You may have bad breath. And then again, you may not. But somehow Pfizer has convinced you that Listerine kills germs and keeps your breath fresh. That claim seems reasonable to
Marketing Blurb, although we believe we achieve similar results with water, diet, and toothpaste. (Our wife and girlfriend still kiss us without complaining.) But Listerine has decided to go deep and think
outside the mouth. In a
new print ad appearing in
USA Today, Listerine claims there is an association between the mouth and the body. In other words, gum health is an indicator of overall health. The ad quotes “emerging science” rather than any actual clinical studies. Listerine is also sponsoring an ADA brochure entitled “Health Mouth Health Body: Making the Connection.”
Marketing Blurb thinks this might be a reach, but then again, Listerine does have to try a new approach after a judge ruled they could not claim that Listerine substitutes for flossing. Maybe they should just keep their mouth shut. We learned about this from
MSNBC.
