Okay, here’s a simple confession common to many football fans. Whenever there is a commercial break during an NFL game, we usually take a bathroom break and hit the kitchen before returning to the game. So, countless folks like us are not really good prospects for game advertisers. So this year, the NFL has decided to try something new called branded vignettes. A branded vignette is a 15 or 30 second—ahem—recap of game highlights or players sponsored by one of the game advertisers. FedEx, IBM and EA Sports will participate in these branded vignettes. Marketing Blurb expects that by mid-season, you will be watching the FedEx first and ten, or the IBM unnecessary roughness penalty flag. If you think this technique sounds familiar, you are not crazy. The NFL used the same technique in 1997, but dropped it, fearing fans would deem commentary too commercial.
