Since only boomers seem to watch the evening news, the time slot is ripe for drug advertising for every conceivable aliment. On the plus side, many this trend will ease as pharmaceutical companies shift more of their advertising online. According to eMarketer, drug marketers will increase their online spending about 25% this year to $ 780. These companies are wisely following their targeting audience of nearly 100 million Americans consulting the Internet for health care information. Health portal sites like WebMD are popular, but pharmaceutical companies are also goosing their own websites. "Pharmaceutical marketers are giving their sites the look and feel of social-niche networks," says eMarketer senior analyst Lisa Phillips. As long as everyone follows FDA guidelines, we think this is a promising development, and would improve our outlook on life while watching the evening news.
