To survive in a complicated world, brands need a simple iconic image. Simple images cut through the clutter and remind us of what brands promise to deliver. It used to be we could count on the ubiquitous orange Union 76 ball—the iconic gas station image. But Union Oil does not even exist anymore, and the familiar brand icon is owned by ConocoPhillips. But nationwide, ConocoPhillips is removing orange 76 balls, and replacing them with drab flat signing. Can anyone stop this carnage? Well, maybe you can. As it turns out, there is a consumer protest website called Save the 76 Ball, which features photo evidence of this destruction, and encourages customers to sign a petition for ConocoPhillips to save the orange 76 balls. Serious advocates can order one of the orange balls that stations once offered free as car radio antenna toppers. Do you want you children to grow up in a world without the orange icon? We think not.
