Our wife and our girlfriend insist we write about Starbucks too often. But we remind them that Starbucks is low-hanging fruit, because they are a marketing behemoth who insists upon constantly tinkering up a simple and successful proposition. First, Starbucks decided to sell music with their java. This seemed reasonable and easy enough to ignore. Next they decided to hawk a movie. This must not have worked well,
because we haven’t heard about future movie promotions. Well, we learned from
The Wall Street Journal (paid subscription required,) that now Starbucks is preparing to promote their first novel. The book is
For One More Day, by Mitch Albom. Starbucks will sell the book naturally, and show videotaped conversations with the author on their website. This approach sounds innocent enough, so we will withhold judgment. The author will also appear in Starbucks locations in eight cities to discuss the book and promote literacy. We think the author appearances are a great idea as long as Mitch does not create a back-up at the pick-up counter. We keep bumping to Ernst Hemmingway at Starbucks anyway, an he is always great company.
