It used to be that small companies with meager advertising budgets used guerrilla marketing to draw attention to their brand, products or services. Guerilla marketing is a grab-bag term for nontraditional advertising outside of normal media channels. Guerilla marketing is often staged live without advanced hype. Guerilla marketing succeeds by its quirky character and element of surprise. And now that the impact of traditional advertising is waning, blue chip 800-pound gorilla companies want a piece of the action. That’s why a full size Volkswagen Polo carved from a block of ice melted for twelve hours on a London street recently. Microsoft, Adidas, and even McDonald’s have staged low-key one-shot guerilla events in cities around the world. Traditional companies are trying to cut through advertising clutter and create consumer buzz face-to-face.
