While retailers tend to shy away from overt political posturing, 7-Eleven decided now would be a good time to end their 20-year relationship with Citgo gasoline. Citgo is a subsidiary of Venezuela’s state-owned oil company, and you’ve probably heard the news that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez used his speech before the United Nations to label President George Bush the “devil” and an “alcoholic." While most Americans are likely unaware of the association of Citgo with Venezuela, company spokeswoman Margaret Chabris said "Regardless of politics, we sympathize with many Americans' concern over derogatory comments about our country and its leadership recently made by Venezuela's president." 7-Eleven sells gasoline at 2100 of their 5300 US locations, and is considering creating their own brand of fuel. In the meantime, they will purchase from multiple suppliers. While some industry analysts applaud the move, others believe 7-Eleven is seeking consumer favor for their patriotic change of heart.
