Marketing Blurb is not an automotive industry pundit, but even grease monkeys know Ford Motor is leaking oil big time. We are not sure how to save the brand, but we do know that product quality and value counts more than advertising and promotion. Pundits in the know recommend that Ford dump some of their acquired brands (Jaguar, Volvo, Land Rover, and Austin Martin) to concentrate on the founder name
plate. Of course there is also an elephant in the room named
Mercury. We learned from
The Detroit Free Press that sales of Mercury division cars have dropped 55% of the last decade. In fact, sales of Mercury have been declining steadily since 1985. As such, we are puzzled that Ford announced they are committed to saving the brand as part of their new restructuring program. Yes, there would be a significant cost to forced shuttering of the Mercury dealership network. GM already swallowed that pill for Oldsmobile, and Ford needs to lose their sentimentality and pull the trigger on this puppy. Think of this as the
Mercury Blow Out Sale—hee hee.
