We often ridicule US auto makers because their products and marketing gaffes are low-hanging fruit. But today, we need to praise GM for their initiative in hydrogen vehicles. You probably already know that hydrogen vehicles are pollution free, and that hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe. And as you might expect, technology is not really the issue delaying deployment of hydrogen vehicles. The problem is
convincing oil companies to offer hydrogen filling stations to compete with gasoline. Well, GM has decided not to wait for the oil industry or government regulators. Instead, GM is building a prototype for a home hydrogen refueling unit. Ideally, this will be an affordable, compact unit powered by sunlight or electricity, which would allow customer to fill their hydrogen cars overnight in their own garages. According to
USA Today, “home refueling makes the possibility of fuel-cell cars "much more real," especially since building hydrogen fueling stations would be a "massive undertaking," says Ron Cogan, publisher of the Green Car Journal.” GM is hoping the at-home filling option will be available as early as 2011.
Marketing Blurb thinks this is a fine idea, and we wish GM well with this venture.
