Marketing Blurb suspects that consumers are tuning out television commercials. And we are not just talking about digital video recorders zapping commercials electronically. Rather, consumers are not longer paying much attention. Yes, they will laugh if you add is amusing. But humor does not sell much these days. The same is true in Japan, where even a higher percentage of households use DVRs. To help combat the decline
in commercial advertising revenues, Japanese television networks are running—ah—
commercials about commercials. According to
The Wall Street Journal (paid subscription required,) the nation’s 133 television commercial stations are running a month-long campaign “to remind viewers of the contributions made by TV commercials to popular culture.”
Marketing Blurb regrets we are unqualified to comment of Japanese culture, but we will say that US commercials have contributed little to US culture. We believe US commercials too often demean rather than inform or uplift society. We will step off our soapbox now.
