Now you might think that the menu at Subway restaurants does not suit itself to the Orthodox Jewish faith, and you would be right, naturally. But that did not stop an enterprising Lebanese Christian developer from setting up shop in a Jewish neighborhood in Cleveland. Ghazi Faddoul, had already opened 100 Subway locations in Cleveland, and new location right outside the Jewish Community Center recreational and cultural facility seemed ideal. Of course this location required a unique kosher menu. According to The Wall Street Journal (paid subscription required,) Faddoul “removed ham and bacon, replacing the cheese with a soy-based substitute and keeping an Orthodox Jew on hand at all times to supervise food preparation. In observance of the Jewish Sabbath, Mr. Faddoul closes the restaurant early on Friday afternoon and all day Saturday.” While this is the first kosher Subway in the chain, the fast food restaurant is more aggressive than rivals in pursuing “unorthodox” locations, including “inside a church in upstate New York, a handful of coin-operated laundries in California, a Goodwill Industries store in South Carolina, a car dealership in Germany and an appliance store in Venezuela.” While we choose to “eat fresh” at home, Marketing Blurb applauds this Subway initiative.
